Parents/Guardians Junior Triathlon Guide

For many parents/guardians this may be the first time your child has entered a triathlon event.  Triathlon is a fantastic sport and the event on Sunday 1st September is to encourage children to have a go in a competitive format.

There are some strict rules for triathlons. Although we want this to be a fun event this guide can help us to run a safe event and for the children to get the best out of their event.

Registration will open from 9am with a Parent/Guardian briefing at 10.30am.  This will be held in the Gymnasium at the leisure centre.

During registration the child will:

  • Be given two sticky labels one for their helmet and another for their bike
  • You will be given their race number on a bib they will need to wear this for the cycle and the run.
  • Their race number will be inked on their leg and their arm (this is by permanent pen and will come off after a few days)
  • At this point please let us know if your child has any allergies to marker pens or latex swim caps

They will be instructed to do the following:

  • Bike can be taken to transition area along with clothing for cycle and run
  • Trainers must be taken to the pool area – there is a short run from the pool to the transition area
  • Once you have put your items in transition you will not be allowed to return to the area unless you are a competitor. We ask that all parents/guardians stay away from the transition area while the race is in progress.
  • You will be able to walk the course if necessary to reassure the competitor – please do not move any markers.

  • This will be the main briefing given before the swimming starts. This will include what is expected of the children and the parents/spectators.

Swimming Section

  • The swim will take place in the Huish Leisure indoor swimming pool
  • The first swimmers will start at around 11.00am
  • All competitors must be on poolside after the Parent/Guardian briefing
  • Tri Stars 1 will go off first followed by 2 then 3.
  • All swimmers will enter and exit at the deep end and there will be no more than 3 swimmers in a lane.
  • All swimmers must start from in the water. Diving is not allowed.
  • Spectators will be allowed along poolside. The spectator area is on the far side of the pool hall either sat on window ledges or benches.
  • The swim will be an interval start the competitors will be set off at intervals one after the other. This is less intimidating for competitors but can make the results more complicated to calculate but we will endeavor to get the results printed as soon after the last competitor has finished.
  • Competitors will be required to wear one of the hats provided by the organisers.
  • The lengths will be counted by one of the volunteer marshals on the day.
  • The hat will be taken off on poolside and then child will head to T1a

Transition Area

T1a – is the hardcourts

  • In T1a competitors will be directed to find their shoes, shirts, shorts and coloured vest.
  • They will then be directed to run towards their bike in T1b

T1b – is the playground behind the Science block

  • In T1b competitors will be directed to find their helmet and bike.
  • Each child will be allocated a space on the racking with their race number attached to it.
  • Their helmet must be put on and secure BEFORE they pick up their bike and their bike must be put back BEFORE they remove their helmet.
  • Competitors must push their bike out of the exit area before mounting their bike at the designated point, ensuring that their race number is clearly visible to race officials.
  • Competitors must not interfere with another competitor’s equipment in the transition area.
  • Marshals will be on hand to help unrack and rack bikes as the frames we have are designed for adult bikes.

Cycling section – NO SLICK TYRES!!

  • Slick tyres are strictly forbidden. Due to the nature of our course, it is a health and safety concern for any bikes to have slick tyres. Bikes that have slick tyres cannot be used and may result in the competitor not being able to compete, without the possibility of a refund.
  • This section is mainly on grass with some tarmac areas, they will not be on any public highway.
  • HELMETS – these must be approved by the BSI, ANSI, Snell or equivalent standards this will be checked by the transition marshals.
  • It is imperative that the bike is in roadworthy condition and the bike has both working brakes on the front and back.
  • The cycle route will be laps of the field.
  • When the competitor has completed the correct set of laps they will be directed back to transition
    • Assistance – no individual support is permitted while they are on the course.
    • Any part of the cycle course may be covered on foot but on these occasions the competitor must carry or push their own bike.

Running Section

  • All running will take place on site and will involve running out and back to the finish going around a cone at the correct distance marker.
  • No form of locomotion other than running and walking is permitted.
